By JAGAT [26/Dec/2024] Shillong, fondly called the ‘Scotland of the East,’ is a destination that enchants tourists with its heavenly landscapes, pleasant weather, and vibrant culture. Surrounded by rolling hills, mist-covered valleys, and pristine waterfalls, Shillong is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a refreshing escape from the chaos of urban life. Its unique blend of traditional charm and modern amenities makes it one of India's most sought-after travel destinations.
While Shillong itself offers a plethora of attractions, from the bustling Police Bazaar to the serene Umiam Lake, the real magic lies in exploring the nearby gems that enhance the beauty of your journey. Places like Cherrapunji, with its breathtaking waterfalls, and the crystal-clear waters of Dawki’s Umngot River, add a distinct charm to your itinerary. These destinations showcase the diversity of Meghalaya’s landscape and allow you to delve deeper into the region’s culture and heritage.
Guwahati - In order to visit Shillong, one has to arrive in Guwahati to proceed further to Shillong. Guwahati is located along the southern banks of the Brahmaputra River, nestled at the base of the Shillong plateau. One of its most prominent landmarks is the Kamakhya Temple, perched on Nilachal Hill, which holds great significance in tantric Hinduism. In addition to Kamakhya, the city is home to several historic Hindu temples, such as the Umananda Temple, Navagraha Temple, and Basistha Temple, each offering a glimpse into the region's rich spiritual and cultural heritage.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary - Around 56 km from Guwahati and 120 km from Shillong, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a lesser-known wildlife destination, but definitely worth a visit. The sanctuary is a significant home to the endangered Indian one-horned rhinos, after the popular Kaziranga National Park. Pobitora offers jeep, elephant and boat safaris to explore the wildlife sanctuary thoroughly. Spread over just 38.85 sq. km, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary serves as a fantastic weekend destination. While returning from a Shillong tour to Guwahati, Pobitora can be a good fit for an additional trip before concluding the trip.
Cherrapunji - Considered the wettest place on Earth, Cherrapunji is renowned for its unique living root bridges. It is located about 54 km from Shillong, requiring around two hours of travel. It’s an ideal weekend getaway, offering breathtaking natural beauty and the charm of its iconic root bridges. Beyond the famous living root bridges, Cherrapunji also boasts several stunning waterfalls that are worth exploring. Among the highlights is the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, a must-visit attraction that showcases the ingenuity of nature and local craftsmanship.
Mawlynnong Village - Mawlynnong is widely celebrated as one of the cleanest villages in Asia, but it is more fittingly called "God’s Own Garden." This picturesque village, located on the southern edge of Meghalaya’s ranges, is adorned with lush fruit orchards, flowing streams, swaying palms, and the timeless traditions of the Khasi community. Adding to its charm is one of Meghalaya’s most iconic landmarks - the Nohwet Living Root Bridge. This incredible structure was crafted by intertwining the roots of the Ficus Elastica tree over a framework, a process that has been carefully nurtured through generations.
Dawki River - The Dawki River, also called the Umngot River, is one of Meghalaya’s most breathtaking natural attractions. The river is famous for its crystal-clear waters, offering an unobstructed view of the riverbed. Located in a small border town of the same name, Dawki is also home to the historic Dawki Bridge, a suspension bridge built during the British era that spans this stunning waterway. The river’s beauty is especially captivating during winter when its waters take on an emerald-green hue and appear as transparent as glass. Visitors can enjoy serene boat rides, marveling at the underwater views visible from above.
