By JAGAT [12/Aug/2024] For my birthday this year, I decided to do something different—trade in the usual celebrations for a road trip to the enchanting Pobitora National Park. Nestled in the heart of Assam just 48 kilometres from Guwahati, Pobitora is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, Kaziranga. However, this hidden gem is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts particularly those eager to catch a glimpse of the majestic Indian one-horned rhinoceros.
We set off early in the morning the crisp air filled with the excitement of a new adventure. The drive from Guwahati to Pobitora takes about two hours, winding through scenic landscapes that range from bustling cityscapes to serene countryside. As we left the city behind the road became narrower, flanked by lush green fields and quaint villages. The journey itself was a delight with the promise of nature's splendour awaiting us at the end.
Upon arriving at Pobitora, we were greeted by the tranquillity of the park a sharp contrast to the urban chaos we had left behind. Spread over 38 square kilometres, Pobitora may be smaller compared to other national parks, but it boasts a high density of rhinoceros making it one of the best places in India to see these incredible creatures up close. The park also serves as a birdwatcher's paradise with over 200 species of birds calling it home.
We checked into our eco-friendly resort located just a stone’s throw away from the park's entrance. The rustic charm of the resort, with its bamboo cottages and locally-inspired decor added to the experience. After a quick lunch of traditional Assamese cuisine, we were ready to explore the wild.
The highlight of the trip was of course, the Jeep safari in Pobitora. As we embarked on the safari the anticipation was palpable. The open jeep allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the environment, with the cool breeze carrying the earthy scent of the forest. The guide a local with a deep knowledge of the area shared fascinating insights about the park’s flora and fauna.
It wasn’t long before we spotted our first rhino. There it was, grazing peacefully just a few meters away from us it’s imposing form a reminder of the sheer power and beauty of nature. Throughout the safari, we encountered several more rhinos, each sighting more thrilling than the last. We were also fortunate enough to spot wild boars, deer, and a variety of birds, including the colourful kingfisher and the majestic crested serpent eagle.
After the safari, we returned to the resort as the sun began to set. The sky was painted in hues of orange and pink, casting a golden glow over the landscape. We spent the evening around a bonfire, sharing stories and enjoying the serenity of the surroundings. The resort had arranged for a cultural program, where local artists performed traditional Assamese dances and music. It was a perfect blend of nature and culture, making the birthday celebration truly special.
The next morning, we decided to take a nature walk before heading back. The park in the early morning light was a sight to behold—mist hanging low over the grasslands, birds chirping, and the occasional rustle in the bushes hinting at unseen wildlife. The walk was peaceful and reflective, a perfect end to the trip.
As we drove back to Guwahati, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment. The birthday road trip to Pobitora National Park had been everything I had hoped for—an escape into nature, a chance to witness incredible wildlife, and a celebration that was both unique and memorable. If you are looking for a destination that offers tranquillity, adventure and a deep connection with nature, Pobitora should definitely be on your list.
