By JAGAT [23/May/2024] Morigaon is a charming town steeped in rich regional history, intriguing legends, and distinctive traditions. Situated approximately 78 km from Guwahati, it boasts numerous tourist attractions and is blessed with natural beauty, diverse flora, and fauna. The Brahmaputra River forms the district's northern boundary, while the western horizon offers views of the snow-capped Himalayas. Morigaon is also a significant agricultural area, with the cultivation of vegetables, jute, mustard, wheat, and paddy providing a steady income for the local population.
Arimatta, a legendary ruler, was succeeded by his son Jongalbalahu, who was killed by the Kacharis near Kajalimukh. According to legend, Jongalbalahu tried to escape through the Kollong River, surfacing at Raha and Jagi. The region's history, detailed by Bhimsingh, reveals that Morigaon was once ruled by six independent leaders. During internal conflicts in Darrang, princes Supradhvaj and Makardhvaj fled across the Brahmaputra and settled in Bahakajari. Supradhvaj married the daughter of King Mangal Singh and became the seventh king. In the time of Lachit Borphukan, princes from Darrang sought new lands. Bhimsingh settled near Mori Beel, despite local disfavour, leading to the establishment of Morigaon. Morigaon became an independent district in September 1989, separated from Nagaon district.
In order to reach Morigaon from the distant cities of India, you have to arrive at Guwahati first. Guwahati can be easily reached both by train and flight. since the town has no official bus service, you have to hire a cab from Guwahati to reach Morigaon, which involves a drive of nearly 2 hours. Alternatively, take a train from Guwahati to Jagi Road Railway Station which is merely 22.5 km from Morigaon. The train journey from Guwahati to Jagi Road will take a little more than an hour and from Jagi Road you need to drive for about 40 minutes to reach Morigaon.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary - Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, situated on the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River in Morigaon district, is home to Assam's second-largest population of one-horned rhinos, following Kaziranga National Park. Pobitora Jeep Safari is the primary attraction of the sanctuary. Also, do not miss the elephant safari while visiting the Pobitora. The perennial water bodies (Beels) in Pobitora serve as breeding grounds for various fish species and provide essential resources for animals like buffalo and wild boar. These Beels also attract many migratory waterfowl. In addition to rhinos, Pobitora is home to several critically endangered, endangered, vulnerable, and near-threatened bird species.
Kachasila Hill - Located 10 km from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Kachasila Hill is a popular tourist destination. The hilltop offers mesmerizing scenic beauty and houses a historically and religiously significant temple. In addition to attracting general tourists, the site is also frequented by researchers and archaeologists.
Mayong - Mayong, a cluster of villages renowned for its association with black magic, is located on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Morigaon district, Assam. This intriguing destination draws tourists with its legendary tales of magic and mysticism. Visitors often remark on the eerie silence that pervades the area, enhancing its mysterious allure. Additionally, Mayong is bordered by rich wildlife, with the nearby Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary being a prominent attraction.
Deosal - Located approximately 4 km from Jagiroad town along National Highway No. 37, Deosal is home to a prominent ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Shiva Ratri Mela is celebrated with great reverence here every year. According to local belief, Deosal was once the ashram of Valmiki, where Sita, wife of Lord Rama, was abandoned.
Sivakunda - Located in the Amsoi Hills of Morigaon district, the captivating Sivakunda Waterfall is a magnet for tourists and nature photographers. The cascading milky white water, obstructed by rocks and hills, flows gracefully into a tranquil pool below.
