By:- JAGAT [06/Jan/2023] Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Morigaon district of Assam. The wildlife sanctuary is primarily famed because of the thriving population of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, after Kaziranga National Park which is also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The one-horned rhinoceros, also known as the Indian rhinoceros, is a remarkable species native to the Indian subcontinent. Recognizable by its single, prominent horn and thick, armor-like skin, this rhinoceros primarily inhabits grasslands and swampy areas. With a population that has been steadily recovering due to dedicated conservation efforts, the one-horned rhino is a symbol of wildlife preservation in India and Nepal. Its imposing yet gentle presence and unique adaptations make it a fascinating and important species within its ecosystem.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located about 56 km east of Guwahati, Assam’s largest city. The sanctuary is easily accessible by road, with a scenic drive that takes approximately 1.5 hours from Guwahati. The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, which is well-connected to major cities across India. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Pobitora.
To witness and marvel at the glimpse of the one-horned rhinos, that have been rendered vulnerable by IUCN, the possible way is to book a jeep safari and explore the entire wildlife sanctuary. However, Pobitora also offers other activities as well, that keep the tourists engaged to create awesome memories.

The early morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best chances of spotting these incredible creatures, along with other wildlife such as wild boars, leopards, and various bird species.
